AMHERSTBURG — The Town of Amherstburg has officially recognized the work being done by the Provincial Marine re-enactment group.
Mayor Wayne Hurst presented Provincial Marine president David May and vice president Peter Rindlisbacher with a town flag to be flown when the group travels to various re-enactments. Hurst noted the "living history group" was established in 1999 and is the largest and best equipped marine history group in Canada.
The Provincial Marine has leased the Commissariat in the Navy Yard Park from Parks Canada since 2002. They have several replica boats, canoes and cannons and have a formal agreement with the Canadian Navy to help replicate Naval history to the public.
"They've been very busy," said Hurst. "They've travelled widely throughout Canada and the United States."
The group also conducts educational classes and demonstrations in area schools, Hurst pointed out. The Provincial Marine has also hosted student interpreters at the Commissariat for the last seven years and has also organized several activities and events within Amherstburg.
"They are very active in events in our community," said Hurst.
Hurst credited the idea to donate a town flag to the group to former councillor Gord Freeman, the latter also being a Provincial Marine member.
The Provincial Marine has never approached the town for money, Hurst stated.
"They have done an outstanding job in our community for many years," the mayor concluded. "We are very proud of what they do for Amherstburg."
